ApMV infects naturally apple, Prunus sp., roses, hazelnut
and other species. Apple mosaic is identifiable in spring on foliage
of particularly sensitive cultivars like Golden Delicious, Gala or
Jonathan.
ApMV used to be rare in European apple trees. It was disseminated
by the widespread distribution of the first infected Granny Smith
clones, where it is latent and produces no symptoms.
Leaves develop pale yellow to bright cream-colored areas as they
expand during early spring. Mosaic areas can be irregular or occur in
bands along major veins. Growth may be retarded and yield reduced in sensitive
cultivars.
