Grapevine Leafroll associated Virus 3 (GLRaV-3)
GLRaV-3 is the best investigated of a group of at least seven serologically
distinct viruses which appear in grapevine usually in mixed infections causing the
leafroll disease. All common cultivars and rootstocks may host the virus, but
american rootstocks usually do not develop any symptoms.
The symptoms can not be distinguished from those caused by the other leafroll
viruses. The leaf area of red cultivars turns reddish with only a small, green
line along major veins. The leaves roll charateristically, yield and quality of
the grapes are reduced. White cultivars develop only slight yellowish discolorations
of the leaves.
Different to the other leafroll viruses, GLRaV-3 is not only transmitted by grafting
but by the mealybug Planococcus ficus. To reduce the spread of the
infection, removal of infected plants, control of the vector and strict
testing measurements are required.
