PNRSV infects a wide range of fruit trees and is quite frequent. It can replicate
in numerous tissues including gametes and the apical meristem, and is pollen
transmissible, but the rate of transmission is low. There exist a number of
serologically related strains with varying degrees of virulence.
Necrotic disorders on leaves caused by PNRSV have been described under different
names including apricot necrotic ringspot, cherry tatter leaf, Stecklenberg
disease and peach ring spot.
Bud necrosis is characteristic for PNRSV. This bud failure is often determined in
nurseries, where the success of grafts is reduced serverely.
